Effective Communication Workshop
Saturday, April 24th – Danbury, CT – 10:00am
Event contact: Melissa Mesite, medical practice communications specialist,
860.633.7788 ext. 283
Research has demonstrated that using more effective communication skills improves
diagnostic accuracy, increases involvement of the patient in decision making and
increases the likelihood of adherence to therapeutic regimens. Additional benefits
are an increase in patient and clinician satisfaction and a reduced likelihood of
exposure to malpractice litigation. For most of the time, participants work individually
and in teams to analyze re-enactments of actual cases, reach agreement on what was
and was not effective in the cases, and then create responses that would be more
effective.
By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Improve awareness of a clinician's roles regarding the importance of communication
as an essential aspect of health care.
- Gain understanding of the concept that complete clinical
care consists not just of "find it and fix it" but of four communication skills:
Engage, Empathize, Educate, and Enlist.
Disclosing Unanticipated Outcomes
Saturday, March 27th – Norwalk, CT – 10:30am
Event contact: Melissa Mesite, medical practice communications specialist,
860.633.7788 ext. 283
Physicians are required to discuss outcomes which differ significantly from the
anticipated. Are you prepared? The goal of the workshop is to enhance participants’
ability to re-establish trust and rapport in the face of adverse outcomes. Research
and experience suggest that the clinician’s ability to effectively respond to the
patient and family’s concerns and emotions are the best way to reduce the likelihood
that the situation will escalate to more contentious legal process.
This workshop will help doctors:
- Understand the rationale for greater openness when there
has been disappointment with care and possibly injury associated with medical or
systems error.
- Appreciate others' perceptions of the situation (e.g.,
patients, family, colleagues, staff).
- Consider steps to take before, during and after disappointing
outcome.
- Acknowledge and respond constructively to the emotional
and ethical challenges in these situations.
- Practice the disclosure skills in a variety of clinical
situations.
Please note, as a prerequisite for attending this workshop, doctors must have attended
CMIC’s Effective Communication Workshop.
Specialty Seminar for Radiologists
Thursday, April 29th – Norwalk, CT – 6:30pm
Event contact: Melissa Mesite, medical practice communications specialist,
860.633.7788 ext. 283
Each year the CMIC Risk Management Committee performs a claim review of a specific
specialty to identify issues associated to the resolution of these cases. This year
our focus has been Radiology. This seminar, provided exclusively to CMIC policyholders,
was developed to assist doctors in recognizing liability exposure as it relates
to radiology. Recent claims data suggests a substantial rise in the number of claims
in this area. Seminar attendees will gain knowledge of valuable strategies to improve
patient care, optimize patient outcomes and minimize exposure to litigation.
By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
- Enhance communication skills.
- Understand legal terminology as it relates to malpractice
claims.
- Understand malpractice risks from inconsistent or incomplete
medical record documentation.
